The Idea

Let’s go traveling for 6 months!! Probably not the first time the idea had been thrown out there. Yeah yeah, wouldn’t that be awesome? But of course, in the back of your mind all sorts of considerations become insurmountable obstacles - what about our bond, our home, our jobs, insurance, medical aid, our dogs, how on earth would we afford that, isn’t Africa dangerous?

But having the idea thrown around more and more often and proposing solutions to all the above challenges, it suddenly started to became more and more a reality over the months. The plans and research was set in motion.

Dates changed many times and so did the route but what eventually unraveled was a 2 month stint in South America and another 4 months traveling the West Coast of Africa in Mo, our Toyota Hilux, a petrol gobbling double cab. Perhaps that’s not even final, two flights and the Inca trail our only committed dates.

We got Mo in 2007, 2 days before her first adventure into Northern Botswana for Christmas. To celebrate her acquisition and Christmas Eve, we popped a bottle of Moet et Chandon and the cork became her key ring. She’s been Mo ever since and somehow the name suits. Mo has done Mozambique, and deepest Botswana a few times but has now been kitted out with winch, new suspension, all terrain tyres, a canopy, draw system and roof top tent, snorkel - and although she looks like a complete city slicker all done up, she’s reliable and comfortable!
