Visa's

Visas are obviously all dependent on what country you are from. As South Africans, we only need a visa for Bolivia in South America which we intend on getting on the way after 3 failed attempts to get it in Johannesburg prior to departure.
The consulate is in an unmarked house and after being deferred to another day to hand in our applications twice and then being told telephonically that we should leave our passports and dollars in the postbox, we decided to get them on route.

The other complication we faced on getting Africa visas was that because we were going to South America first, we needed them to be future dated which was not possible if beyond 3 months.

The Visas required for South Africans on our West Africa route are for Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, DRC, Congo and Angola. All of these visa's are a mission of note, be prepared to do a lot of waiting around, and getting very little response from the officials.

Make sure you go over the correct border posts and not the smuggler posts which are everywhere, if you get caught you will be spending a lot of time trying to explain yourself and you may end up unluckier than we did.

Visas are not required for Togo, Benin, Gabon and Namibia.
